How Kitendeni Farmers Built Their Own Solar Wildlife Alarm
In Kitendeni village, nightfall used to mean fear, elephants and other wildlife slipping into farms unseen. Now the alarm speaks first: a wire trips, a horn blares, and the animals turn back before a single crop is damaged.

The Challenge
For years, farmers in Kitendeni suffered constant crop losses from wildlife encroachment, especially elephants raiding fields at night. Existing deterrents were limited and unreliable, forcing farmers to keep watch for hours in the dark, often at real personal risk. Harvests were destroyed season after season, threatening food security and household income, while the community had few affordable, locally suited tools to protect what they grew.

What Changed
After a training on innovative human-wildlife conflict mitigation, covering tools like the Mwakima Noise Canon and the Buzz Box from Save the Elephants' HEC Toolbox, the Kitendeni Crop Protection Team (CPT) didn't just copy what they learned. They brainstormed their own locally relevant idea and built the Mboingwesi Noise Canon. Farms are now ringed with copper wire linked to a solar-powered battery system. When wildlife tries to enter and cuts the wire, the circuit breaks, and instantly triggers a horn speaker loaded with customizable deterrent sounds, gunshots, bee buzzing, and predator calls that scare the animals off and alert farmers. Wires are set at different heights to deter multiple species, and farmers simply reconnect the wire to reset the alarm.

The Results
The Mboingwesi Noise Canon is now protecting farms across Kitendeni, giving farmers a practical, affordable, and locally owned way to guard their crops without sleepless nights on watch. A single training has grown into community-driven innovation: farmers who once only received solutions are now designing their own, tailored to their land, crops, and wildlife. The creativity and leadership of the Kitendeni CPT have brought real pride to the village and stand as proof that when communities are equipped with the right knowledge, they build better tools, not just borrowed ones.
