Solar Pumping system for Oljoro and Kinachere Villages

Abstract

Rural communities in Oljoro No. 5 and Kinachere villages faced unreliable water access due to dependence on the national grid and diesel generators, resulting in high operational costs and frequent supply interruptions. This project addressed the problem by installing solar-powered pumping systems and hybrid controllers, ensuring continuous water availability, reducing costs, and promoting sustainability. The intervention serves 5,864 inhabitants, improving access to safe water for domestic and institutional use, while enhancing hygiene, reducing time spent fetching water, and providing cost savings for reinvestment in system maintenance.

Introduction

Implemented in Oljoro No. 5 (Simanjiro District) and Kinachere (Hanang District), the project aimed to replace diesel and grid-powered water pumps with solar-powered systems. The goal was to provide sustainable, reliable, and cost-effective access to safe water for the residents.

Key Activities

  • The project replaced the national grid and diesel-powered pumps with solar-powered systems in both villages. Oljoro No. 5 received 15.4 kW solar panels with a 7.5 kW motor, and Kinachere received 8.8 kW solar panels, ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for all community members
  • Hybrid controllers were installed to allow the pumps to operate with both solar energy and with the existing grid or generator backup, providing an uninterrupted water supply even during periods of low solar availability
  • Community-Based Water Supply Organization and RUWASA staff were trained on the operation, basic maintenance, and monitoring of the new systems, equipping local personnel with the skills needed to manage day-to-day operations and respond to minor technical issues independently.
  • Remote and periodic monitoring were done to track water production and consumption, ensuring long-term functionality and operational efficiency while enabling early detection of potential issues that could affect water supply.
  • The project reduced water production costs by eliminating diesel use and reducing reliance on the national grid, allowing water to be sold at affordable tariffs and enabling reinvestment in system maintenance and extension.
