Green Energy for Safe and Sustainable Water Supply for Rural Communities
Abstract
Communities in Kinyamburi, Getanuwas, Laghanga, Narakauo, and Oltotoi villages experienced unreliable access to water due to dependence on diesel generators or an unstable electricity grid, resulting in high operating costs and frequent service interruptions. In Oltotoi village, there was no access to clean water at all, forcing residents to travel long distances to collect water from ponds that were unsafe for human consumption. The project addressed these challenges by installing five solar-powered hybrid AC pumping systems equipped with hybrid controllers, photovoltaic arrays, and remote monitoring. The systems ensure a reliable year-round water supply, improve sanitation, support schools and health facilities, and significantly reduce operational costs. The intervention directly benefits 23,965 residents, enabling affordable water tariffs and promoting the long-term sustainability of the water schemes.

Introduction
The project was implemented in Kinyamburi, Getanuwas, and Laghanga villages in Hanang District, and in Narakauo and Oltotoi villages in Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania. It focused on improving access to safe and reliable water by constructing a new solar-powered water supply scheme in Oltotoi village and retrofitting or replacing existing diesel- and grid-powered pumping systems with solar-powered hybrid systems in the other target villages. The approach ensured a cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, and dependable water supply for domestic use, schools, and health facilities.

- Training and capacity building of Community-Based Water Supply Organizations to strengthen system management, operation, and long-term sustainability.
