Menstrual health and hygiene are critical for the well-being of adolescent girls. However, in rural Tanzania, many schoolgirls struggle to access safe and hygienic sanitary products, often resorting to unsafe alternatives that can lead to infections. This lack of access also contributes to school absenteeism, limiting educational opportunities for young girls.

A school consultation conducted as part of this project revealed that availability remained a challenge, as these products were not easily accessible in their localities. Many girls were forced to rely on homemade menstrual materials, which compromised their hygiene.

To address this, the project introduced high-quality reusable sanitary pads made from antimicrobial material, ensuring safety and hygiene. This innovation was essential in preventing infections and guaranteeing long-term usability.

A key component of the project was the development of an affordability strategy. By purchasing sanitary pads in bulk, costs were reduced, making them more accessible to schoolgirls. Additionally, a structured sales and distribution model was implemented within schools, where trained health teachers and matrons facilitated purchases and provided guidance on menstrual hygiene.

Designed for sustainability, the project secured strong support from public authorities and engaged parents in awareness campaigns. This comprehensive approach not only improved menstrual hygiene management but also ensured economic viability.

Following its success, the project is now set to be scaled up across the entire Manyara region, bringing health and educational opportunities to thousands of schoolgirls.
